Learn to Play

New to Pickleball?

Welcome! If you’ve never played pickleball before, we’re excited to help you get started. At Avalon Beach Pickleball Association (ABPA), we require all newcomers to complete an Introductory Lesson and attend at least one Beginner Trial Session before applying for membership. This ensures that everyone learns the correct way to play and helps keep our regular sessions running smoothly.

Introductory Lessons

Duration: 75 minutes
Cost: $30

As a small club with limited resources, we unfortunately cannot accept everyone who learns to play with us. To become a member, you must have:

  • Good mobility
  • Good balance
  • Reasonable hand-eye coordination

This is for your safety and to ensure a positive experience for all players. Please review our Health & Safety Policy.

At the conclusion of your Introductory lesson, your coach for the day will tell you whether you meet the threshold criteria referred to above. If you don’t meet our criteria, we suggest that you approach the Northern Beaches Pickleball Club. It is a much larger club with more coaching resources. In this case, we will gladly refund $20 of your $30 Introductory Lesson fee.

Our Introductory Lessons are designed for those who genuinely intend to join our club. Once you join ABPA, you’ll receive a $20 playing credit through OpenSports.

Lessons are held on the outdoor courts at Avalon Beach (Barrenjoey Road).

Availability:

Currently there are no Introductory lessons scheduled. Contact the Secretary at mail@avalonbeachpickleball.org.au if you would like your name added to our wait list. We will let you know when lessons become available.

Beginner Trial Sessions

When you have successfully passed your Introductory lesson, you’ll need to attend a Beginner Trial Session. These sessions are usually held indoors at the Avalon Recreation Centre most Saturdays from 1:00 – 2:30 PM, but the venue and times may vary.

The Beginner Trial Session is designed to ensure you have the confidence and fundamental skills to participate safely and enjoyably in regular club sessions. It also gives you the opportunity to decide whether pickleball is the sport for you.

Please note that your host for these sessions will review your skills and make a final decision on your ability to meet the criteria referred to above.

Membership Application

Please do not apply for membership until you have successfully completed a Beginner Trial Session.

Once your application is approved and your membership fee is paid, you’ll be added to our Register of Members.

Most people will be given an initial grading of Beginner or Lower Intermediate, and can then book into sessions marked:

  • ALL GRADES
  • INTERMEDIATE & BELOW

Note: All session bookings are handled through OpenSports.
